9 ways singles survive Valentines' day

By: Pritibha & Priya

Valentine’s Day, the day in where love is expressed towards the significant other, regardless it is towards a lover, friend or family members.  For some single people, it might be one of the most miserable days of the year, where all you see and hear is about “lovey dovey” couples. These are a few ways of how singles survive during Valentine’s Day.

1.      Single’s Night Out

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with friends who share the same relationship status. Instead of opting to go out for dinner and waste our money on food that is too overpriced, what me and my friends did last year was have a get together at my house and indulgence ourselves in some cheap fast food and splurge our money on drinks. We spent our money on drinks at this Irish restaurant and bar  Malones at KLCC. Getting to dance and move to the beat of great songs and just enjoy the night is a good way of diverting the feeling of being single on this day.

2.      Family Love

Valentine’s Day is about celebrating love and it doesn’t mean you just have to spending the day with your boyfriend/girlfriend. Most singles prefer to go out with their family and spend some quality time together, expressing their love for family. Thinesh 29, said “what better way spending Valentine’s Day than with a bunch of your crazy family members and friends that never fail to cheer you up and crack some jokes”.

3.      Movie marathon

Unfortunately, some singles find the pleasure in making themselves feel more miserable on this day. Susila Devi, 19 said that she spent her Valentine’s Day by letting herself feel more miserable given the fact that most of her friends are in a relationship and she feels like as if she is missing out on something.  She rather stay at home, lie in a couch with a tub of ice cream and watch back-to-back love movies in celebration of   her detachment or watch a movie with a friend at a cinema.

4.      Let-it-all-out

Some singles go to great extent to let the world know that being single is being miserably lonely. My newsfeed on Facebook on February the 13th was mainly about a few singles expressing how unlucky they are to not have a date on Valentine’s Day. What they fail to realise is that it’s not such a big deal compared to those who don’t have a mother or father during Mothers day or Fathers day. The portrayal of not having a valentine on Valentine’s Day and that they are upset about it is shown through sad or hatred Tweets or status updates. Hence, the feeling of letting it out somewhere or to someone is an option to certain singles when it comes to surviving the V-day.

5.      Solitude

Kumar 25, prefers to stay at home and do nothing but make himself feel more miserable because he feel that the “grass is greener on the other side”, thinking that people being in relationships are more happier than him. Shanti ,19, said that it’s one of the most common misconception that people have, thinking that they would only be happy if they are in a relationships. She  merely rushed into a relationship thinking that it would make her happy and instead end up arguing with her boyfriend all the time and feeling even more miserable when she were single . It’s one of the regrets that she has rushing into a relationship knowing that she wasn’t ready for one .Being single and alone does not mean that you choose to be unhappy; instead it allows one to be less dependent

6.      Valentine’s Day with the Pet

Since there are whole lot of pet lovers around, some singles spend their Valentine’s with their pet cat, dog, fish or rabbit. Showing their pet unconditional love has been a better option than expressing it to human beings according to Ranita . She loves and adores the 6 cats that she has and she says that she doesn’t mind at all spending her Valentine’s day with her 6 cats.

7.      Keep yourself occupied

As for working singles, some of them tend to go ahead with OT (overtime). They spend extra hours at work; hence they do not only occupy themselves, but also can make extra cash. As for the students, some singles may attend classes, night classes especially to occupy themselves.  According to what Nava, 21, said “What better day to start on your assignments and stop procrastinating than on valentine’s day” .  You would be able to be a zombie fully immersed in completing your assignment than focusing on being single on Valentine’s Day

8.      Have a Pot Luck

Let’s face the brutal fact that living in the city is not cheap at all especially for a student on a budget. Nowadays some restaurants even charge you about 50cents to RM 1 for a glass of ice water. Secret Recipe just recently started charging 50cents for a glass of ice water. Can you imagine the amount of money you would have to spend eating out during Valentine’s Day. Almost every dish on the menu would be over priced. What me and my close friends started doing a few years back is have pot luck, meaning each of us would cook one dish that we are really good at and bring it over to a friend’s place. This way, less money would be spent on one night.

9.      Shop Till You Drop

According to 24 year old Marina, she spends her Valentine’s Day by shopping, as shopping is her all-time favourite activity. She feels that by treating herself some good pair of shoes and some new clothes would make her happier than going out on a date on Valentine’s Day. What she feels is she does not need to be made happy by someone else but by just making herself happy by shopping on V-day. She said she is more satisfied without expecting someone to do something for her on Valentine’s Day as well as it is her way of surviving the “single’s awareness day”.
