The curious case of SEGi’s missing dumbbells

We have all heard of missing wallets, phones and money but missing dumbbells is a whole different playing field already. Many people come in and out of the SEGi gym in a day a total of 30-40 students walk in and out of the gym doors from opening time to closing time which starts as early as 10am and closes as late as 10pm however rush hour is definitely between 5pm to 10pm. Who were the people involved with the missing dumbbells? And what were the other true reasons behind it are yet to be known, with help by certain parties the evidence draws a little closer.

It was the year of 2012 a total of 3 cases where dumbbells went missing from the SEGi gym confirmed by one of the staffs from the gym management *En. Jamil. 2 cases in which the dumbbells were not returned to the gym but found around the hostel compound and with the help of the hostel warden, a spot check was done and the missing dumbbells were found. The identity of the student was not revealed however it was mentioned by *En. Jamil that the student involved was an international student. The next 1 case where a student ‘borrowed’ the dumbbells and the dumbbells mysteriously reappear back at the gym, *En Jamil claimed that the student returned it to the gym the next day even though it was a good thing to have returned it back however the gym does not implement any rules regarding the borrowing of dumbbells. So far there have not been any new cases regarding dumbbells as of late.

When we asked students regarding their opinion on the situation and if they knew any person who was involve with the missing dumbbells, 1 student responded by saying that he knew two guys who actually stole a few dumbbells and brought it back to their place, the reason why they did this is because they wanted to work out at home and that they did not have the money to buy a set of their own said by *Nazir. It was mentioned by *En. Jamil that a set of dumbbells consisting of 10 pairs of dumbbells can cost up to rm5k depending on the package and amount. Another response by a student regarding the issue on why people steal dumbbells is because “It would be a waste to buy your own because every few weeks you would need to buy a new pair because every week you will lift different weights” said *Abdul. A person even said that people even steal dumbbells to sabotage their friends work out secretly because they didn’t want their friend to look better than them stated *Jim and also another reason is that some people steal dumbbells in order to impress other people, they pretend it’s theirs when friends come over and claim that they work out when indeed they don’t mentioned *Puvan.

Whatever the reason may be to the stealing of dumbbells it is still not considered acceptable. However regarding the gym itself many students mentioned that the conditions of the facilities is not good and requires proper maintenance which the gym management is working on at the moment. More space would be better and also provide sturdier equipment as well as stricter usage of instruction for the safety of the users was mentioned by *Abdul. Also better air ventilation is also much needed said *Seth.

The case of the missing dumbbells have so far been solved however this does not mean that it won’t  happen again in the near future and if it does the gym is ready for it.
