Facebook restrictions: Yay or nay?

Following the don of the age of technology, teenagers and adults alike are sucked into the sensation known as internet. With the emergence of numerous social medias such as Facebook and Twitter alike, addiction has started to develop and some have even claimed that it hindered their daily life itching with the need to update their social medias. In colleges where education and experience is the primary goal of the establishment, some have implied bans on access to social medias with Facebook being the most restricted. SEGi University, a tertiary education platform has restricted the use of Facebook in the school computer system.
This has left students thinking about the issue which brings us to our issue, Facebook restriction. Good or bad?

Issue in hand, the Facebook dilemma has long since been a debatable problem. Does the benefits from Facebook outweigh it’s incredible addictiveness? For this we take the opinions of the consumers into matter.

Jennifer, a third year student said "I’m happy they banned the access in the school lab because most students spent time chatting which was inconvenient to those who need to do or print assignments which is very frustrating considering the fact that the lab has very few computers compared to the number of students in the University."

Quick interviews with some parents of university students shows that a more than half thinks that it is necessary as this is the age of social medias and having it in place can help reduce the addictivity and potential damage that Facebook might cause in terms of education. One of the parents also said that, “Facebook is like when you search the fridge repeatedly even when you already know there’s nothing you want in it. Unproductive and a big waste of time.”

Chin, a first year student thought other wise, " it's not fair that Facebook was restricted. What are we to do during our break time or while we wait for the next class? We are university students not children." Lu, another student said that “You know, I have a class that uses Facebook as a medium. The class is almost constantly delayed because people can’t access Facebook even when everyone is already present. The ban does have it’s own reasons for being imposed but when it comprimises the quality of education? No.”

However others seem not to be affected by the ban. Shazlina a third year student said "Honestly I don't really care what the school bans. They just need to provide more computers that way, there will be no complaints over computer usage by the students." She also said that the main reason people are ok with the ban is due to insufficient computers for use because it is usually hogged by students indulging in Facebook, watching videos on Youtube or even just playing with the pre-installed softwares.

In a nutshell (a very complex one), the Facebook restriction has its pros and cons which comes into view depending on your current stand point.Students who are often in need of the IT facilities find themselves frustrated at the ‘selfish’ usage of others who are just surfing the net for fun may find that the restriction is fair and well placed while the ones using the facilities for leisure may see it as a restriction of freedom and an act of mistrust from the university.

Whether the restriction will be lifted or not, students should spend their time on Facebook moderately especially when using the available facilities and go the extra mile to give way to students who needs to use the computers for academic purposes. To restrict Facebook or not, alike many other things in life are two sides of the same coin. Two different perspectives of a single issue.
