Is Valentine’s day only for couples?

By: Peria

If I asked you, who are you celebrating your Valentine with? Who comes into your mind?  According to the MacMillan Dictionary, Valentine’s Day is defined as “14 February, the day on which people gives cards and small presents to the person who they love”. From the definition, “the person they love” does it include our family and friend? The common misconception of Valentine’s Day is that, it is only celebrated between couples. So who can we celebrate our Valentine’s Day with?

1.      Family
We all might have dream to bring our partner on a romantic dinner during Valentine’s Day right? It could be near a fancy restaurant or near the beach under the full moon or maybe even in a fast food restaurant. But this not the point, the point here is have we ever taught about celebrating Valentine’s Day with our family? There are many ways we could do that, this way suggested by a Segi student Sarva Priya,19 she stated that we could go out for a candle light dinner with our family as there is no rules that states that no families allowed in candle light dinner. Another student Joshua Low Wai Peng,19 suggested that we could twist our Valentine’s Day celebration with our partner, where instead of just going out with our partner we could bring our whole family to join in to celebrate this day. Amanda Chong,21 also a student in Segi suggested we could go out for some fun activities, such as going out for movie or games to show our appreciation towards them.

2.      Enemy
We all hate our enemies rite? This idea was suggested by a student Chua Jeni, 22 that we should celebrate our Valentine’s Day with our enemies. “I know it repels with the definition of Valentine’s Day but why not?” she stated. She continued,” Our enemies might have hurt us, but they are still humans who craves for love and we should not forget that they are the reason we are who we are today.” She said we could start by giving chocolates or even just wishing them and that we can make changes in our life and the outcome of these changes may surprise us one day, as our enemies may turn out to be our best friend.

3.      Single
According to a student in Shalinee,19 Valentine’s Day can be celebrated alone. She said that before she was in a relationship she used to celebrate it by doing her favourite things such as watching movie, skipping class or playing her guitar. “We could pamper and appreciate ourselves once in a while, just do anything that make you feel happy and never think that we are not qualified to celebrate this special day” she said.

4.      Everybody
We love you, spread the message across, said Jeremy,21 a student from Segi. Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to convey our care to people. Hence, instead of buying expensive bouquets for your partner, why not just use the money to buy chocolates or sweets. Then together with your partner distribute it to everyone you and your partner come across, it could be the janitor, the lecturer, the taxi or bus driver or also a stranger walking pass by you, said Jeremy. By doing this they would definitely fell appreciated and loved. This may sound new but it certainly warms your heart.
