The youngsters of today, or more generally known as Generation Y, have changed so much in comparison with those belonging in Generation X in terms of expenditures, lifestyle as well as fashion styles. They are a “modern technology” generation, where mobile phones, internet, music, video games, and movies are vital in order to survive in today’s world. In fact, this brings up a list of peculiar things that teens would purchase for the sake of collecting or to fulfill their satisfaction.
We have come
up with the 10 most ridiculously expensive items that youngsters have spent on
so far in their lives.
They are…
Mmmhmm, you got that right. You know you’re a true fanatic when nothing feels right without hoarding up an entire special collection of Radiohead’s merchandise, posters and CDs of both the past and the future before hitting the age of 30, or 50s.
2. RM15000 mountain bike
For those with the love of cycling up mountains, hills, or dangerous places deemed to be scary by others, a titanium mountain bike costing up to RM15, 000 surely is worth it because the more expensive the bike, the more gears, functions and relevant gizmos the bike has to provide a better riding experience. And yes, a softer seat to allow your tushie to rest comfortably on while your legs gets a good workout. Besides, why settle on something or lesser quality when you can get so much more with a better bike? This then brings us to the next one.
Dreams can come true if you’ve always had the notion of owning both a mountain bike and telescope, provided that you have the cash to splurge on these two items. This boy of the age 17 has the pleasure of owning both an RM15, 000 mountain bike and a Celestron Nexstar 6 SE telescope bundle worth RM6, 400. And these two items were sponsored by his dad. What a lucky boy indeed. And what expensive hobbies he has too! Not to mention his good taste as well.
4. I need my beats!
While the rest of us are
contented with using cheap headsets purchased at the local gadget store, a
teenage boy at the age of 15 certainly isn’t. His headset is an exclusive Beats
by Dr. Dre headset costing more than RM5, 000. I mean, sure it looks nothing
short of the ordinary ones you can purchase at the local store. Heck, I can
even get a duplicate of this at a lower price. But one thing for sure, this
headset certainly is worth its value. Beat products are produced to emphasize
more on the amounts of bass as well as optimizing particularly towards the
hip-hop and pop genre. That way, this allows the listeners to get down and
funky without risking a spike in their blood pressure for not being able to
increase their bass level or groove to a good ol’ hip hop beat. Pretty awesome,
isn’t it? Highly recommended to those who just wants a good pair of headset
with the ability to provide a good amount of bass.
5. Minions overruling the world!
Well, sort of
technically. These little banana shaped characters from Disney’s movie
“Despicable Me” has driven boys and gals around the world nuts with their
annoyingly cute voices and songs that can melt even the hardest heart to stone.
However, it has created a buzz over the internet when limited collectors’
edition of these lovable creatures was produced worldwide. One girl, age 20, definitely
went overly crazy when she purchased a special edition set consisting of 10
minion models worth RM5, 500 off eBay. Talk about being gaga over toys. And
don’t get me started on how other lovable characters such as Mickey Mouse,
Winnie the Pooh and Hello Kitty isn’t as favored as much as these little
banana-like critters are.
6. Starring for Star Wars
This, ladies and
gentlemen, is the epitome of someone who’s a diehard Star wars fan. Come to
think of it, this movie is pretty old considering it came out in the late 70’s.
You know you’re old school if you know the storyline, characters and the tune
of the movie but if you were crazy enough to purchase a special or limited
edition collection of any of the items, than that’s definitely making a statement. One guy at the age of 19 purchased a Star
Wars exclusive and special edition of the Darth Vader mask and light sabers
worth RM 5, 950. Talk about trying to reenact one of the beloved characters in
the movie.
7.
(Almost)
obtainable robots?
Back in the early
2000, the movie “Transformers” was released worldwide and millions of people
thought it was a pretty cool movie, including me. The whole movie series
garnered about more than 1 billion USD, making its way into the top 5 highest
grossing list of movies when averaged to gross per film in the industry.
However, this does not stop Hasbro from producing and selling special and
limited sets of each character both in stores and online. One fan, 22, actually
purchased an Optimus Prime set costing to about RM 6, 125. Maybe he was
planning to obtain the closest thing to the real product in the movies.
8. It’s not YOUR case, it’s MY case.
Have you ever heard
the reason why phone locks were made mandatory for Apple products, especially
the touch screen music players and cellphones? This is to prevent other people
from using your iPhone or iPod Touch, and to also prevent theft if your cellphone
is linked to your bank accounts. However, you can have the privilege to say you
can’t touch MY iPhone if your iPhone
cover case is a Brikk Trim Titanium iPhone case worth RM8, 576. Technically,
it’s just made out of titanium, but at least you’re contented with the
knowledge that your phone is encased in a good case, and will not crack easily
if you drop it onto the floor… for most parts anyways.
9. Guessing Sunglasses?
When it comes to eye care, pretty
much everyone would spend because it’s one of the most vital organs of the
body. Without eyesight, you’re pretty much gone because we rely on it too much.
However, everyone would spend accordingly on eye accessories such as contact
lens, sunglasses or whatnot because opticians and stores see this as opportunities
to make more money. In this case, a 23-year-old thinks likewise and spends RM8,
000 on Guess sunglasses because “he believes it’s vital, especially in a
tropical country”. Not sure whether to agree or disagree on that, hmm.
10.
Cuckoo
over Chanel
Pretty much every
girl you see on the street knows the name of the most famous icon that made it
big in the fashion industry and has her symbol, the double C, recognized
globally. Yup, you guessed it, it’s Coco Chanel. And these girls would be a
shopaholic at heart. But, you can definitely identify a true shopaholic and
Chanel fan if you’re willing to part with RM 1, 795 for a top with sequins
decorating half the upper part of the top, leaving everything else bare. Talk
about being coco for Chanel.
Those belonging in the Generation
X category are more penny wise than penny pound foolish. They seem to
understand the value of money more than today’s young uns. Nowadays, more and
more youngsters have become more penny pound foolish than the latter.
