Cheap isn’t less on Valentine’s day

By: Vanessa & Monitha

Love is in the air this coming February 14th! People who celebrate this significant day are certainly wondering what the best Valentine’s gift is for their lover, friends or family while keeping their budgets in check. After all, the quality of a relationship is not measured by the quantity of money spent on the other but what actually matters is the good, sincere intention. The following are a few inexpensive Valentine’s Day ideas that will do justice to both your loved one and your pocket.

1. DIY accessories
All you need to do is get the materials, which can be recycled ones as well, and follow the instructions provided online such as Google and YouTube. A lot of money can be saved when you make these yourself as you are not paying for the brand. This is a great idea because you get to handpick the color, size and details of the accessory so that it perfectly fits the preference of your loved one.
Estimated price: < RM 20

2. A home cooked meal
Heard of the saying “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”? Well, it applies to women too, or at least women enjoy seeing men cook. They say it is sexy. So, why not head to the market and grab some fresh ingredients to prepare a meal at home instead of paying double the price at a restaurant? In addition, a candlelight dinner with dim lighting and scented candles would be perfect to make your loved one feel even more special.
Estimated price: < RM30

3. Picnic
Instead of being indoors, perhaps you would want a change of environment on Valentines’ Day under a green, shady tree with the soft breeze. It would be ideal during the evening sunset. Firstly, going to a park is absolutely free and all you need to spend is on snacks or make some sandwiches.
Estimated price: < RM15

4. Love notes

This is a good opportunity for you to pour your feelings out on pieces of paper, collected in a small jar or bottle, for instance. To make it fancier, pour colored salt (use food coloring) into a jar or bottle, then fill it with your rolled-up love notes and close it with a cork or a decorated lid.
Estimated price: < RM10

 5. Meet the family/ friends
Trust and sense of belonging are two important elements in any relationship. Hence, why not bring that special someone to meet your parents or group of friends whom you are close with? This idea works even better if you have not done so previously as you will be able to get to know your Valentine better.
Estimated price: RM 0

6. Kayaking
Want to enjoy some peace and calm Mother Nature can offer on Valentine’s Day? There are kayaks available for rent at Tasik Shah Alam for only less than RM10 per hour! Not only will you be able to spend some quiet time alone with your loved one but also to enjoy a fun boat ride.
Estimated price: < RM10

7. Make a video
With today’s advanced technology, creating a video would cost nothing at all. Just collect pictures or short videos of the both of you together on your happier, more memorable days and compile them all into a simple video. Poems, romantic quotes or meaningful songs can be added in as well. Tip: Use Windows Movie Maker.
Estimated price: RM 0

8. Cycling

Going for a bicycle ride with your loved one is indeed inexpensive as you could either rent bicycles for a low price or use your own bicycle. You could cycle early in the morning to catch the sunrise or even late at night for a moonlight cruise; romantic isn’t it?

Estimated price: < RM15
