Top 10 qualities Gen-Y wants to see in future Teachers

By: Sharinya and Peria

According to Socrates “Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” This quote engulfs Generation Y behaviour well. Students beating up teachers, bullying, absenteeism, or skipping school are basically the disciplinary problems schools are facing over the roof top. Teachers and Ministry of Education Department are struggling to crack the code to find the reason behind all the problematic behaviour from the students. Most Of the Segi University students stated that the basic reasons are the teacher as their qualities are not sufficient that lead students to revolt. Here are some of the qualities that recommended to teachers suggested by the Segi students.

1.      Open Minded
The earth is evolving and new ideas are being accepted, teachers should be flexible in accepting new ideas and challenge themselves. Don’t be rigid with thinking your own ways as we student might not enjoy and feel annoyed.

2.      NO spanking
Spanking people doesn’t work these days as it will only make the student to rebel more. There should be an objective in punishing a student and the punishing ways should not make the student feel insulted. The punishment should be as a chance for improvements and also makes the student realise.

3.      Get Ready
Students will not just sit and accept what is being feed, they love to argue and share ideas. Teachers should be prepare for this, when student asks question it should not be redirected to the student as this show how unprepared the teacher is and would only tarnish the image and credibility of the teacher.

4.      Neutral
Students that are outstanding may grab teacher’s attention. Teachers should never be bias to students as it is their profession to remain neutral to all students.

5.      Reinforcement
It is psychologically proven that reinforcement is an effective way for encouraging behaviours. Students are always motivated when extra points are given for doing a task. It also makes them feel the teacher is sincere in helping the students.

6.      Groom yourself
Neat, clean and well dressed teacher could increase the students respect towards them. Teachers who doesn’t comb their hair or buttons his shirts and teachers who wear provoking would just ridicule themselves in front of students.

7.      Be A Role Model
Students are asked to be punctual, switch off the phone, do not sleep in class, but what if the teacher itself does it? Teachers are suppose to be students role model, they should practise what they teach.

8.      No Commanders
Authoritarian way does not work on generation Y students. Instead of being a commander giving instructions, teachers should try new ways, be more like a mentor or a friend. This would enable the communication to go smoother hence what a teacher’s said is easily absorbed.

9.      Nagging or Bragging
Students prefer teachers who shares about their knowledge and experience. Bragging and nagging will make student fed up and annoyed. As the motive of a class is to facilitated students not promoting own selves. Teachers should leave their status on the door and treat students like a friend.

10.  No book worm

Student of generation Y prefer learning in ways that they can connect. Instead of solely depending on books, students prefer teaching using experience or relating to the surrounding as this would enable them to relate and understand the subject more.
