Top 10 trendy words 1970’s need to know to understand Malaysian Gen-Y

The wide spread usage of social media platform like Facebook, Twitter and 9gag have encouraged people to create more modern jargons and terms. Generation Y nowadays are frequently communicating using modern jargons. In order to keep up with them, you might find it useful to pick up some of the modern terms. If you are having difficulties to understand us(Gen Ys), this article might just be the right one for you.



1. #YOLO

YOLO, an acronym for the phrase “You Only Live Once”. It is often used to bring attention to exciting, dangerous events or often as an excuse for irresponsible behaviors. It simply represent us Gen Y who are always portrayed as adventure seeker.





2. #EPIC
Generation Y has brought a new definition for the word epic. It represents heroic act, majestic or impressive. The most common usage of this word is “EPIC fail”. EPIC fail is when you thought that you had done something proud but instead everyone felt the opposite. The picture above portrays a perfect example of epic fail in taking picture.



3. #Photobomb

Remember the “peace sign” you place on top of your friend’s head when you are taking group pictures? That is a form of photobomb. It is the act of intruding someone else photos (usually on purpose). Photobombing has existed for quite some time but recently it is given a term to stand on its own. 






4. #Troll/ Trolling

No, not that mystical creature. Troll is a jargon used when someone deliberately, sarcastically and cleverly pissing people off, usually via the internet. It is similar to playing a prank on others but in the form of words. The crucial element in the art of trolling is smart sarcasm, where it left you speechless.

5. #Bojio

What is bojio? Bojio is a term adapted from Chinese language which simply means –“why didn’t you invite me along?” Widely used by the uninvited when people share their current location, via Twitter and Foursquare. Even the local burger joint take advantage on this #bojio rage and use it as marketing tactic.

6. #Twerk



Thanks to Miley Cyrus’ performances on VMA 2013, this word is now widely known and used. Most dictionaries define it as “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance”. In our opinion, let the picture speaks itself.

A modern twist for the word “cool”. Youngster nowadays do not use the term cool anymore, the word is swag. You have swag?

8. #Foreveralone

A term used to mock the singles one out there. Do take note of your news feed on Facebook or Twitter for the upcoming Valentines. We are pretty sure that you will see this term a lot. 









9 #Loller / #LOL



LOL, acronym for Laughing out loud is no longer something new. However, Loller a new term refers to a funny person. 













 10. #Hipster

Being mainstream is not the trend anymore. In order to stand out, some sort to be a hipster. Hipster ought not to be influence by the mainstream media or trend. The key is not to be mainstream. Eating on a table is too mainstream and therefore the picture above.
