Bittersweet of Valentine’s

By: Ian & Michelle

Red roses, chocolates, and romantic candle light dinner, are among the must-haves for Valentines’ day. On this day, love is literally in the air and people will do everything they could to please their other half --- or maybe to pursue their other half? To the couples or couples-to-be, Valentines’ day would be the best day to show love and appreciation, but as for the singles, Valentines’ day is not a day to be anticipated.

Real proposal in SEGi University

The males will plan for the dinner and preparing special surprises while the ladies scratching their head off searching for the perfect outfit for the special day. Sounds like a perfect typical Valentine’s Day isn’t it? However, Valentines’ Day brings about different meaning for different people.
“It is a romantic day where people got to spend time together and I planned to surprise my girlfriend!” says Derek, 24, attached.

Some couple might see Valentines’ day same as any other say, but somehow they still try to do something for their other half. Both Mia and Kelvin think that it is no need for a special day to show love. Kelvin, 24, from New York believed that every day is Valentine’s Day for him and his partner as long as they have each other.

“However, on that day we will perhaps have dinner in a nice restaurant and movie and maybe sex” chuckled Kelvin who is grateful that they managed to get a day off on Valentines’ day.

While Mia, 23 says “I will pretend that I have forgotten about this day and see what he will do but I expect nothing from him although it will be nice if he remembers”.

“I expect nothing on that day, but maybe just a better dinner at some western restaurant with her” says Paul, who acknowledged himself as a not-so-romantic guy.

Not everyone who is attached thinks that Valentines’ day is a special day. Kim, 24, attached, on the other hand thinks that “Valentine’s day is just a normal day. There is no need to buy flowers and gifts’’

The sweet sides of Valentines’ Day are being commercialized to many during the whole month of February. However, little did they know about the bitter side of Valentines’ day. The increase in the price of dinner set, roses and gift sets contributed to the downside of Valentines’ day. The bitterest part of Valentine ’s Day has yet to be revealed. What about those lonely souls who still remained single or those who declared their relationship status as complicated? What they can do on that day and how do they survive?

“Valentines’ day is bullsh*t, I feel especially lonely on that day” says Rachel, 21, single.
“ The saddest moment is when you feel lonely and wanted to ask your friends out, and then you realized that you are the only one who are alone on that day!” she added

However, some singles still remained positive about Valentines’ day despite not having a date. Vino, 24, views Valentines’ as a day to appreciate people who love you and stand beside you all these time no matter what.

“Valentine’s day is the day where you show your love towards the one you love, maybe I will go out with my girlfriends” she continued

Despite all the sadness that the singles felt on Valentines’ day, they are grateful that they are able to save money from using it on unnecessary thing. “I think that I should keep the money for myself rather than spend on unnecessary things and God knows whether your “investment” is worth it,” says a pathetic single who would like to remain anonymous. He added that he planned to watch the movie alone during the Valentines’ night and seeing how foolish the couples will be celebrating the day.
